The number is not the name of a lost file, and it was not taken from a mysterious room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But her question deserves more than \u201cthat is just the code.\u201d Why does a website need a code at all, and why this particular number?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A website and browser are having a conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you open a page, your browser asks a website\u2019s server for a particular address. The server replies with the page and a status code telling the browser how the request went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually, you never notice that code. A successful request commonly receives <code>200<\/code>, and the browser shows the page. If the requested page cannot be found, the server can reply with <code>404 Not Found<\/code>. The browser then displays an error page, which may include a search box or a way back to the home page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the distinction I would give my daughter: <strong>404 does not mean the whole internet is broken.<\/strong> It usually means the website was reached, but the specific page at that address was not available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your internet connection fails before the browser reaches the website, you may see a different kind of message. That is not the same as receiving a 404 response from a server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does the number start with 4?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HTTP status codes use three digits. The first digit tells the browser the broad type of response. Codes beginning with <code>2<\/code> indicate success. Those beginning with <code>3<\/code> concern redirects. Codes beginning with <code>4<\/code> belong to the client error group, while codes beginning with <code>5<\/code> concern server errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That explains the first <code>4<\/code> in <code>404<\/code>. The complete number identifies the particular response called <strong>Not Found<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one detail that often gets lost in simplified explanations. The final <code>04<\/code> is not a separate secret message meaning \u201cmissing page.\u201d The current HTTP specification says the last two digits do not have their own category meaning. It is the assigned code <code>404<\/code> as a whole that means Not Found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The phrase \u201cclient error\u201d can also sound as though the visitor did something wrong. Sometimes they did type an address incorrectly. But a 404 can just as easily result from a website owner deleting a page or leaving an old link in place. The category describes the response, not who deserves blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Was 404 named after a room?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a popular story that the code came from a room numbered 404 at CERN, where the Web began. It makes a memorable story, but it is not the origin of the error code. Tim Berners Lee rejected that explanation when asked about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The documented explanation is less dramatic: 404 is one of the numbered HTTP responses. An early HTTP specification published in 1996 already lists <code>404<\/code> as <strong>Not Found<\/strong>. The current specification continues to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson is useful beyond this one error. A neat story about a technology term can spread widely because it is easy to remember. That does not make it more reliable than the documentation describing how the technology works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why might a page return 404?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simplest cause is a typing mistake. One incorrect letter in a web address can point the browser to a page that does not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A page might also have moved. Someone may have changed an article\u2019s address without updating an old link. The content could have been deleted, or a link on another website could contain a mistake. In each case, the website may receive the request but have nothing available at that exact address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 404 does not tell you whether the page will return later. It says the requested page was not found <em>now<\/em>. If a server knows a page has been removed permanently, there is another response called <code>410 Gone<\/code>, although many sites use 404 for missing pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A domain can still be active even when one page on it returns 404. The domain is the website\u2019s main address, while each page has its own URL. Its error page should clearly say that the requested page was not found and offer a sensible way to continue browsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should a website owner do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real 404 is not automatically a problem to hide. If a page has genuinely been removed and there is no suitable replacement, returning the 404 status is appropriate. Google\u2019s guidance says a missing page may return <code>404<\/code> or <code>410<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the page has moved to a clear replacement, a permanent <code>301<\/code> redirect can take visitors to the new address. Redirecting every missing page to the home page is less helpful because it can leave visitors wondering where the information went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also something called a <em>soft 404<\/em>. That happens when a page tells visitors it cannot be found but the server returns <code>200<\/code>, the code for success. The message and the code disagree. A custom error page can look friendly while still returning a genuine 404 status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The answer I would give my daughter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c404 is the website\u2019s short way of saying, \u2018I heard your request, but I cannot find that page.\u2019 The first 4 tells the browser it belongs to a group of request problems. The whole number, 404, means Not Found.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That answer may not be as exciting as a secret room at CERN. It is more useful, though. The next time we see 404, we will know the website responded.
