Snapchat introduced Planets because some users wanted more insight into their friendships. The feature turns frequent Snap and Chat activity into a solar system: one friend appears as the Sun, and your planet shows your position among the people they interact with most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is Snapchat\u2019s stated reason. The company says online conversations can lack the social cues people get when they meet face to face. Planets was designed to add a little context in a visual, playful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a planet can feel more personal than a measure of app activity. That tension explains both why Snapchat made the feature and why it later changed how people access it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do Snapchat Planets actually show?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The feature is called Friend Solar System and is available through Snapchat+<\/a>. When you open a friend\u2019s Friendship Profile, you may see a Best Friends badge with a gold ring. Tapping it can show which planet you are in that friend\u2019s solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planets represent positions among eight friends. Mercury is closest to the Sun, followed by Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Your position reflects how often you and that person communicate on Snapchat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to read that last sentence carefully. The feature reflects activity on Snapchat<\/strong>. It cannot measure how much a friend values you, how often you see each other in person, or who would support you when you need help. Someone you talk with every day at school or work might appear farther away simply because you rarely exchange Snaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snapchat also says the feature is private. It does not display everyone else in your friend\u2019s solar system or publish a list for other people to inspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did Snapchat choose a solar system?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Snapchat could have displayed a number. Instead, it chose planets, which fit an app built around images, avatars, and visual expressions of friendship. The Sun gives the feature a clear centre, while each planet provides a quick way to understand a position without opening a list of names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, Snapchat says it built Solar System after hearing from people who wanted to know more about their friendships. A conversation in an app gives you messages and photos, but not all the context you might notice in person. The feature was meant to offer one more signal about how two people interact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is another reasonable explanation, although it is an inference rather than a reason Snapchat stated for creating Planets: Friend Solar System also gives Snapchat+ subscribers an experience that the standard app does not offer. Snapchat+ includes several optional features that add ways to personalise or explore the app. Planets fits that approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moment a playful feature can feel serious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine two close friends who see each other nearly every day. They talk on the way home and meet at weekends, but one of them rarely uses Snapchat. When that person checks a planet, they see Neptune and wonder, \u201cAre we not close anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing in their real friendship necessarily changed. The icon only reflects a narrow part of how they communicate. Yet seeing a distant planet could still hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the part of this feature I would pay most attention to. It is easy to understand Mercury as \u201cimportant\u201d and Neptune as \u201cunimportant,\u201d even though Snapchat cannot know what a friendship means outside its app. A visual designed to provide context can accidentally invite comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snapchat acknowledged this concern in April 2024. The company said some subscribers enjoyed the insight, but others could feel worse when they appeared less close to a friend than they expected. In response, Snapchat made Solar System off by default for new subscribers<\/strong>. People who want to use it can turn it on in their Snapchat+ feature settings and turn it off again later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does your planet prove how someone feels about you?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No. A planet tells you something about Snapchat communication, not about affection or loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may change as people\u2019s messaging habits change. A friend might become busy with exams, use another messaging app, or spend more time talking in person. None of those possibilities can be explained by a planet alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why I would treat the feature as a conversation detail, not a relationship test. If you enjoy seeing where you appear, you can use it for fun. If it makes you anxious, you do not need to keep checking it. And if you are worried about a friendship, a direct conversation will tell you more than an icon can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Snapchat introduced it, in one answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Snapchat introduced Planets to give interested users a private, visual clue about their communication with friends. According to Snapchat, community feedback helped inspire the feature, and its purpose was to add context that online conversations sometimes lack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The criticism showed the limit of that idea. People can read emotional meaning into a planet even when it only represents activity within an app. Making the feature optional lets subscribers choose whether that insight is useful to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snapchat Planets can be interesting. They just should not have the final word on a friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
