To apply for PMP certification online, create an account on PMI’s official website, complete the application and submit your education, project experience and training details. After approval and any required audit, pay the exam fee and schedule your test.
The application happens online, but you can choose an available test centre or an eligible online exam appointment. Submitting the form does not award the certification. You must meet PMI’s requirements and pass the exam.
Project Management Professional, commonly called PMP, is a certification offered by the Project Management Institute. This guide explains the application process using requirements checked on October 30, 2026.
1. Check Your PMP Eligibility
Before starting the application, compare your education and professional experience with PMI’s current requirements.
| Education route | Required experience leading projects |
|---|---|
| Secondary school qualification, such as a high school diploma | 60 months |
| Recognised associate-level or qualifying technical/vocational qualification | 48 months |
| Bachelor’s degree or higher, or an officially recognised equivalent | 36 months |
| Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme | 24 months |
The experience must fall within the 10 years before your application. Overlapping project months count only once.
For example, managing two projects during the same six months does not give you 12 months of qualifying experience. List your projects accurately and calculate the calendar time without duplication.
For technical or vocational qualifications, check the recognised education level. A course title containing “advanced” or “professional” does not automatically establish degree equivalence.
2. Complete the Project Management Training Requirement
Alongside qualifying experience, you generally need 35 hours of project management training. An active CAPM certification can also satisfy the training requirement.
Choose training that clearly states its learning content and qualifying hours. Keep the completion certificate and course details with your application records.
A training change takes effect in December 2026
From December 1, 2026, live instructor-led training must come from an eligible provider. PMI identifies these as:
- A PMI Authorized Training Partner.
- A China Registered Education Provider.
- An eligible accredited academic programme.
This applies to live classes delivered online or in person. PMI says training completed before that date remains eligible under the earlier requirements.
Self-paced courses can still come from other organisations, provided they meet PMI’s requirements. Check the delivery format before enrolling, because a live online class and an on-demand course follow different provider rules.
3. Create Your PMI Account
Visit PMI’s official website and open its PMP certification page. Select Apply Now, then register or sign in.
Creating an account and purchasing PMI membership are separate decisions. You can apply without buying membership, although membership affects the advertised exam price.
Use an email address you check regularly. Review your name and personal information carefully, especially before arranging the exam.
Keep your login details available throughout the process. Your account is where you manage the application and follow the next steps.
4. Enter Your Education, Training and Project Experience
Prepare your information before completing the form. Have your qualifications, training records and project dates ready so you can check each entry against your records.
For every project, explain its purpose, your responsibilities and the outcome. Focus on work you actually led or directed.
A useful description answers these questions:
- What did the project need to achieve?
- When did your involvement start and finish?
- What planning, coordination or delivery responsibilities did you hold?
- What result did the work produce?
You do not necessarily need the job title “project manager.” Your responsibilities matter more than the title on your employment record. If you work in aerospace and are considering project leadership, our guide to aerospace engineer salary in the USA explains pay benchmarks, living costs and citizenship considerations. Those salary figures cover the engineering occupation overall and do not measure a pay increase from earning PMP certification.
However, routine operations, personal activities and school projects should not become qualifying project experience simply because you describe them differently.
Describe your contribution clearly
Avoid entries that only say you attended meetings or helped colleagues. Explain the decisions, schedules, risks, stakeholders or delivery activities you managed.
Write in your own words. A reviewer should understand your role without having to guess what “supported the project” means.
5. Submit the Application and Follow Any Audit Instructions
Review the dates, qualification details and training entries before submitting. Then monitor your account and email for PMI’s response.
PMI audits a proportion of applications. Selection does not automatically mean your application contains an error.
An audit may require:
- Copies of your education qualifications.
- Verification from supervisors or managers.
- Training certificates or supporting letters.
PMI allows 90 days to supply the requested audit documents. Its handbook says the audit should take around five to seven business days once the necessary documentation meets its requirements.
Follow the instructions in your notification. You cannot continue through the certification process until you complete the required audit successfully.
Keeping records organised from the beginning makes this stage easier. Contact potential references early so they know which work they may need to verify.
6. Pay the Exam Fee and Schedule Your Appointment
Once PMI accepts your application and you complete any required audit, follow the payment and scheduling instructions.
At the time of checking, PMI’s main PMP page displayed these exam prices:
| Applicant status | Published exam price |
|---|---|
| PMI member | US$405 |
| Nonmember | US$655 |
These figures cover the exam fee. Training, optional membership and preparation materials can add to your total.
Check the final amount in your account before paying. If you are considering membership, compare the combined membership and exam cost with the nonmember option.
After payment, follow PMI’s instructions to schedule your appointment. Check the date, time zone, exam language and delivery method before confirming.
If you choose to buy optional study planners or printable schedules on Etsy, our Etsy coupon code guide explains how to check offers and purchase restrictions. These items are optional and do not replace PMI’s required training or exam fee.
Can you take the PMP exam online?
Online proctored testing is available to eligible candidates, subject to applicable restrictions and appointment availability.
Pearson VUE requires candidates to pass a system test using the same computer and network they will use for the exam. You also need a suitable private testing space and acceptable identification.
Read the current OnVUE rules before booking. If your equipment, internet connection or room cannot meet those conditions, consider an available test centre.
7. Prepare for the Current Exam and Maintain Your Certification
PMI updated the PMP exam in July 2026. Its current materials specify 180 questions and 240 minutes of exam time, so choose preparation resources that match the current exam.
Check your eligibility deadline in PMI’s notification. Candidates generally have a one-year eligibility period and can attempt the exam up to three times within that period.
After passing, plan for continuing professional development. Maintaining PMP certification requires 60 professional development units every three years, along with the renewal fee.
The application is easier to complete when your records are ready. Start by checking your eligibility, then gather evidence of your experience and training before opening the form.
